The mush tun holds the temperature for 1.5 - 2 hours (probably more), the boiler has enough power for a rolling boil and the beer tastes great. I also brought a wort chiller and hop filter. Written By: Rob Baker (09 January 2010) Not a bad set at all. The mash tun holds its temperature well enough for a 2 hour mash, but if you're looking to mash for longer, it's going to need some assistance. Wrap it in blankets and/or put it on a heated pad.
The works fine. A second element would be nice, but you can't have everything. It works well as a hot liquior tank, but I feel that it didn't boil the wort as well as it really should. It can get it to a rolling boil, but I wouldn't really call it vigirous. Still, it seemed to do the job okay. All in all, it works, but if you can you'll want to fit a second element.
It's worth notign that with this kit you also get a grain bag, so if you're feeling lucky you can try mashing with the boiler! Written By: Lewis Tyrer (30 December 2009) This kit provides an easy way into the world of All Grain brewing for those of us that don't feel up to building our own kit. The boiler is good and will provide a nice rolling boil. It also has a thermostat which works ok but is fairly difficult to maintain a target temperature with it. The boiler is just about big enough to hold the boil volume for a 23ltr brew length (i.e. in the region of 30ltrs), although this probably needs to be topped up gradually to guard against any boil over.
The mash tun works very well and holds the temperature but it can suffer from stuck sparges on occassion which may be down to the manifold design or even the lack of syphon effect from the tap which might be helped by adding some tubing to bring the outlet to below the bottom of the mash tun.
The bitter kit comes with basic instructions but you will still need to plan your brew day and decide on the exact process to use yourself - including working out how much water to use for mash / sparge to collect sufficient wort for the boil. The resulting beer is of very high quality though and again is an easy step towards doing your own recipes.
All in all a very good kit for the starter. Written By: Russell Pope (09 August 2009) * The boiler that comes with this kit appears to do the business. I had no difficulty hitting the temperatures I wanted and the thermostatic cut out switch worked well without any problems, 4/5.
* The mash tun works but the valve assembly is rubbish. It works but, its not nice. The Brew It Yourself Forum Members seem to have managed to assemble better Mash tuns and £140 is, well £140. I'd like to see something better for this kind of money. Good volume though. 2/5
* The grain kit is reasonably easy for a novice although the final product would do well with better written directions. The hops that came with my kit had no name, weight or any directions on how to use! A starter kit should come with better instructions. 3/5
Don't be put off though, I had a lot of fun and can't wait to do my next AG brew. Overall 3/5 Written By: Kevin Dalley (08 August 2009)
